Incorrect H1-H6 heading structure
The heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3...) on your page does not follow logical order. Levels are skipped or duplicated.
Why it matters
Screen readers use headings to navigate the page. An incorrect structure disorganizes navigation and can penalize SEO (content structure signals).
How to fix
- 1
Rules for heading hierarchy
One H1 per page (main title). H2 for main sections. H3 for H2 subsections. Never skip a level (H1 → H3 without H2). Do not use headings just for their style.
- 2
Check in Gutenberg
Document overview (list icon at the top left of the editor) → "Document" tab → "Structure" section. Gutenberg displays the heading hierarchy with errors.
- 3
Verification tool
The HeadingsMap extension (Chrome/Firefox) displays the complete heading hierarchy of any web page. Use it to audit your content quickly.
