XML sitemap missing or unreferenced

No XML sitemap was found on your site, or it is not referenced in robots.txt. Google must discover your pages on its own, which may delay indexing.

Why it matters

New pages may take weeks to be indexed without a sitemap. For sites with a lot of content, some pages may never be discovered.

How to fix

  1. 1

    Enable Yoast SEO sitemap

    Yoast SEO → Features → enable "XML sitemap". Your sitemap will be available at /sitemap_index.xml.

  2. 2

    Enable native WordPress sitemap (6.0+)

    php
    // Disable if you use Yoast or Rank Math
    add_filter('wp_sitemaps_enabled', '__return_false');
  3. 3

    Submit to Google Search Console

    Google Search Console → your property → Sitemaps → enter your sitemap URL → Submit. Google will start crawling it immediately.

  4. 4

    Reference in robots.txt

    text
    Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
